I started out with modular and ended up getting a whiteface Korg ARP Odyssey (via an Arturia Minibrute). I got the Minibrute so I didn’t have to spend time patching just to get a voice going, and for the funky multi mode Steiner-Parker filter and Brute factor distortion. I got the Odyssey mainly for the 3 filter revisions (all excellent with very different characters) and the fact it has two oscillators meaning it opens up duophonic playing, sync etc. The only downsides are that it’s still pretty hefty despite the reduced footprint and it’s not cheap compared to other options like the Minibrute. Also the architecture is unusual and takes a while to get used to, but it’s worth it. A great sounding synth with bags of character and lots of sonic potential - if you have the space and money to spare I’d recommend it. Similarly the MS-20 Mini is also worth a look, though I find its patchbay (if you choose to use it) is even less intuitive than the Odyssey’s front panel layout!
